What Are “White Spots” On Teeth?

White spots on teeth can be caused by a variety of different things, including over-fluoridation (the use of too much fluoride), and congenital dental diseases such as enamel hypoplasia. However, the most common cause of white spots on teeth is demineralization of the teeth.

This happens when oral bacteria create acid that eats away at the enamel, destroying minerals like calcium and phosphates. This weakens the tooth, and is often the first step of cavity formation. In addition, the loss of minerals tend to create white patches that discolor the enamel, compromising the appearance of your smile.

This is very common after braces are removed. Patients can’t clean the tooth surface where the brackets are attached, so it’s typical for there to be some minor staining and enamel weakening in these areas.

Minimally-Invasive White Spot Removal

Wondering how to treat white spots? The best way to treat minor white spots on your teeth is with minimally-invasive white spot removal treatments like enamel microabrasion. In this process, Dr. Singh or Dr. Sulaiman will use specialized tools to gently sand down your teeth very slightly, removing an extremely thin layer of enamel, and eliminating the white stains on your teeth.

In some cases, this may be followed up with fluoride treatments to remineralize and strengthen the teeth, or teeth whitening (bleaching) to restore the natural color of your teeth and ensure that your smile looks bright and beautiful.

However, some white spots are too large or deep to be treated with these types of treatments. In these cases, a cosmetic dental treatment like veneers or dental bonding may be recommended. Porcelain dental crowns may also be used to completely cover the tooth and restore its appearance.

Preventing White Spots On Teeth

If you have had treatment for white spots on your teeth and want to prevent them from coming back, there are a few things you can do. First, make sure you practice excellent oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing once a day helps eliminate oral bacteria, food particles, and acid, reducing the risk of white spots on your teeth.

You should also try to reduce your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Most commonly, white spots form in areas where acid has eaten away at the minerals in your enamel. Acidic foods can speed up this process, and oral bacteria turn sugars into acid as they digest them. This causes tooth demineralization and, eventually, decay.

Finally, make sure to see a dentist like Dr. Sulaiman or Dr. Singh at Smile Society General Dentistry every six months for a comprehensive oral exam and teeth cleaning, and to ensure your teeth remain strong and healthy.
